The little dark-brown seeds actually come from the green cardamom pod. You can use the whole pods (remove them before serving the dish) or powder the seeds and add that. Cardamom is a herb. The seeds and oil from the seeds are used to make medicine. Cardamom is used for digestion problems including heartburn, intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, liver and gallbladder complaints, and loss of appetite. Whole cardamom pods are preferred for maintaining the best flavor. The inner seeds are a dark brown to almost black in color and are typically sticky. They increase the flavor and aroma of any food they are added to.
