Star Anise is also known as Star aniseed or badian, the flavour and aroma is liqourice-like and distinctly star anise. It is often broken into smaller pieces & added to rice dishes. One of the key ingredients in chinese 5 spice, this is a common ingredient in oriental cooking.
Illicium verum, commonly called star anise, star aniseed, or Chinese star anise is a spice that closely resembles anise in flavour, obtained from the star-shaped pericarp of Illicium verum, a medium-sized native evergreen tree of northeast Vietnam and southwest China. The star-shaped fruits are harvested just before ripening. In India it is called badian or phoolchakri and in Pakistan, it is called badian. It is widely used in Chinese cuisine, and in Indian cuisine where it is a major component of garam masala, and in Malay and Indonesian cuisines.
